Season 4 Episode 33: Dieting Is Keeping You Stuck

In this episode, I invite you into a powerful reframe — one that shifts everything you’ve been taught about food, cravings, and control.

Because the truth is most people aren’t actually eating from joy.

They’re eating for it.

And that changes everything.

What We Can Learn from Blue Zones Living

I open this conversation by reflecting on the lifestyle patterns seen in communities often referred to as blue zones — places where people live longer, healthier lives.

What stands out isn’t restriction.
It isn’t discipline. It isn’t perfect diets. It’s joy.

  • Joy in preparing food
  • Joy in gathering
  • Joy in slowing down
  • Joy in living with purpose

Food isn’t used to create joy — it’s an extension of a joyful life.

Dopamine Eating vs. Joyful Eating

Dopamine Eating

  • Quick, fast, convenient
  • Used to numb emotions
  • Driven by cravings and reward loops
  • Often tied to stress, restriction, or deprivation

Joyful Eating

  • Slow, intentional, connected
  • Rooted in gratitude and presence
  • Experienced through all senses
  • Comes from a regulated, safe nervous system

In our culture, food has become a dopamine hit — a quick fix for how we feel.

But in more connected ways of living, food becomes part of an already joyful state.

The Fear-Based Relationship with Food

When you’ve spent years dieting, restricting, or trying to “fix” your body, food starts to carry emotional weight.

  • “This is good”
  • “This is bad”
  • “This will make me gain weight”
  • “This will fix me”

I explain how these fear-based associations activate your nervous system into fight, flight, or freeze, making digestion and true nourishment much harder.

Your body is always listening — not just to what you eat, but to what you believe about what you eat.

A New Ritual: Eating with Connection

What if eating became a moment of safety instead of stress?

Here’s a simple practice I share:

  • Sit down with your meal
  • Observe your plate — colors, textures, smells
  • Take a breath before eating
  • Feel gratitude for the nourishment in front of you
  • Remind your body: this is safe

As you eat:

  • Slow down
  • Notice how your body responds
  • Stay present instead of rushing

This is how you begin to rewire your relationship with food — not through control, but through connection.

Trusting Your Body

Even digestion can become stressful when you’re stuck in fear.

Instead of worrying, I invite you to reinforce trust:

  • Trust that your body knows how to process food
  • Trust that your body can eliminate what it doesn’t need
  • Celebrate small signs of regulation

Your body’s natural rhythms respond to how safe it feels.

Why Diets Keep You Stuck in Fear

Searching for the “perfect diet” often comes from fear:

  • Fear of gaining weight
  • Fear of symptoms
  • Fear of losing control

Most diets are based on what worked for someone else — not what your body uniquely needs.

The Missing Piece: Feedback from Your Body

Instead of following rigid rules, I encourage you to build a relationship with your body through feedback.

Ask yourself after eating:

  • How do I feel?
  • How is my digestion?
  • How is my energy?
  • How is my sleep?
  • How is my inflammation?

Transformation happens through self-awareness and trust.
